Bad breath differs in all human. Some people have odious ones, others are mild. In general, bad breath is a terrible experience. It hinders communications with friends and loved ones. People with bad breath usually have an inferiority complex, always feeling that their breath is offensive. Bad breath in most humans is as a result of poor mouth maintenance from childhood. In other to ascertain the causes of bad breath, it is imperative to, first of all, delineate the meaning of Bad breath usually called HALITOSIS.


Bad breath in human is a situation where the mouth of an individual produces an odious smell. It is also the situation where the mouth uncontrollably produces unwanted gaseous substances which is offensive to people around, usually caused by poor mouth hygiene. Halitosis, on the other hand, is usually referred to as bad breath, but it is worthy of note that it is chronic bad breath. It is not the usual odour that oozes from the mouth as a result of the intake of certain food such as garlic or onion. It refers to chronic bad breath. There are individuals whose mouth odour is keen and persistent, even though they have washed their mouth in the morning.


There are various reasons and causes of bad breath in human. Some are conscious and unconsciously caused by people. Bad breath in humans is treatable and also preventable, but that’s a subject for another day. Below are the causes of bad breath or halitosis in humans.


Alcohol consumption absorption is another reason for bad breath in humans; the more often you take in alcohol the more likely you are to experience halitosis. Alcohol has a terrible smell, when overtaken it can lead to dryness of the saliva which may lead the mouth to produce odious gasses.


Those who are a fan of early morning coffee are usually at risk of halitosis. The high intake of strong and high-flavoured coffee may also lead to the dryness of saliva and automatically lead to mouth odour bacteria in the mouth.


This is one of the major reason why most individuals develop bad breath. When you shut your mouth for a long while, you notice that it develops an odious smell. The continuation of this over time has increased the chances of people getting bad breath. The mouth was designed to allow air penetrate into it.


Poor mouth hygiene is as a result of individuals not taking appropriate care of their mouth. Most individuals develop halitosis from childhood as a result of this, they often find it difficult to keep up with good mouth hygiene. How often do you change your toothbrush? How many times do you brush your tooth in a day? Most individuals are unaware that using one toothbrush for over 3 months is wrong. It is advisable to change your toothbrush every 3 months, that way it does not harbour bacteria which are harmful to the teeth. It is also advisable to brush your teeth in the morning and before you go to bed in the evening.


Bad breath or halitosis is also caused by gum disease, caused by a bacteria called plaque. Your teeth are covered with a sticky film called plaque that can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. Plaque contains bacteria, which following a meal or snack containing sugar can release acids that attack tooth enamel. Repeated attacks can cause the enamel to break down, eventually resulting in cavities. Plaque that is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. This makes it more difficult to keep your teeth clean.

Certain foods such as onion and garlic should be avoided from consistent consumption. These foods have an offensive odour that irritates other individuals. When consumed consistently it tends to sync with the individual; You notice that after much intake of garlic, it begins to ooze from your mouth and even your sweat.


Medical conditions such as kidney and liver problem, diabetes, gastric reflux may add to the causes of bad breath. If your dentist has ruled over other causes of bad breath, then the medical condition might be the reason for your bad breath.


Smoking makes you vulnerable to many other health problems. It stains the teeth which invariably affects the gum. Chain smokers always have an odious smell oozing from their mouth; always the smell of cigarette. It deadens an individual’s sense of smell; this is why most smokers are unaware of their bad breath.


Tobacco also attacks the gum with gum disease. Its dries the mouth, this is one of the causes of bad breath.


Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications or breathing through the mouth instead of the nose. The failure of the mouth to produce enough saliva invariably leads to dry mouth. The saliva is very important because it washes the mouth.


The mouth is a house to various bacteria that help in breaking down of food. After food is being broken down, over time what remains of the food particles may develop a foul stench in the mouth. The inability of you to maintain this over time results in bad breath. This is why it is advisable to always rinse your mouth water after eating.
